The dead time is over.
New York Giants players report to training camp today for the beginning of the 2006 NFL season.
It’s been a long off-season. That ugly, mistake-filled farce of a playoff game against the Carolina Panthers has left a bitter taste in my mouth since January.
Some players, Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan most notably, are talking Super Bowl this year. Super Bowl? Only so long as Eli follows the plan and comes into his own this year.
New York Giants fans love defense, and there were some really great free agent acquisitions (LaVar Arrington, Sam Madison) and, assuming they gel into a cohesive unit, they will be a force to be reckoned with. However, if the offense sputters, or the defense doesn’t work as a team, and either way if they put together a string of losses, I fear that all those strong personalities may cause fractures. Which will doom the season and may have far-reaching repercussions.
But, that still doesn’t take away the excitement of opening camp. I’m glad it’s finally here.
